Tree care services in Hoffman Estates, sorted by job
Tree work in Hoffman Estates covers removal, trimming and pruning, stump grinding, storm and emergency work, tree health checks, cabling and bracing, dead and dying tree work, and lot and brush clearing. The service pages below are grouped by what a tree in the yard is doing.

A tree is down or dangerous
A tree already on a house, car or wire, or hung up above a yard, belongs with the storm page. A planned removal is a tree that will come down on a scheduled day: a lean that got worse, a trunk cracked below a fork, an old tree too close to the house. A tree already past the point of saving is a dead or dying removal.
Trees you want to keep
Trimming and pruning cover deadwood up in the crown, limbs over the roof, limbs along a walk, and the shaping that keeps a healthy tree in good order. Topping is not part of the work. A tree health check is for a crack, mushrooms at the base, dieback at the top, or any tree you are weighing against a bill from a removal crew. Cabling and bracing is for a tight V fork with a seam, or a long limb reaching over the house, when the wood below the split is still sound.
Stumps, brush and open ground
Stump grinding is for an old stump in the lawn or a fresh one from a removal, after a utility locate request. JULIE says utility owners mark only the lines they own, and private lines such as sprinkler lines, private lighting and secondary electric lines to detached garages are not marked by them;1 mention private lines on the call. Lot and brush clearing covers a fence line grown in, volunteer trees crowding one you want to keep, or a back lot with brush and stumps from past work. Section 10-4-7 of the code bars removing or clearing any tree 3 inches or more in diameter without Village Board approval or a tree removal permit, on land in the Village other than developed detached single- or two-family residential lots under one acre.2
If you cannot tell what the tree needs
A short description over the phone sorts it out. Useful details before you dial:
- What you see from the yard: a lean, a crack, dead branches, mushrooms at the base, bark falling in sheets.
- Species, if you know it. A rough height measured against the roof or the garage.
- What stands under the tree: house, car, fence, wires, the neighbor's shed.
- Whether anything is near a power line.
- The gate width on the way in, and how long the walk is from the gate to the tree.
What to leave alone: climbing, saws of any kind on loaded or broken wood, pulling on anything hung up in the crown, and anything that touches a power line. Stay back and keep people, pets and cars clear of a tree on a wire. If anyone is hurt or the line is down, sparking or burning, call 911 first. ComEd asks that you not touch a broken limb on a power line and report it at 1-800-334-7661.3
What every job turns on
Every tree is a mix of a few things: the tree as a whole, including branches further from the one you called about; what the tree could land on (house, garage, car, fence, wires, the yard next door); and access through the yard. Say on the call how many trees the job covers and whether any share a fence line with the neighbor. The tree gets a look before any work starts.
Trees around Hoffman Estates
More than 6,000 ash trees have been removed by Public Works and contractors after emerald ash borer, with the ash still standing the ones residents and homeowners associations have treated.4 Oak wilt can be found in all Illinois counties,5 and oaks should not be pruned between mid-April and mid-October.5
Branch pickup and yard waste at the curb
For small branches, the Village runs its own free curbside pickup.6
- The spring and fall rounds run by zone twice a year, with branches at the curb by 7am on the Monday of the zone's week.6
- Branches up to 8 inches across and 10 feet long are accepted, with willow kept separate; stumps, root balls, firewood and lumber are not.6
- For a yard waste bundle set out with the regular haulers, brush must be bundled at no more than 50 pounds, 5 feet long and 24 inches across, with no limb thicker than 3 inches.7
- Village yard waste collection runs from the beginning of April through the end of November only.7
- Free wood chips are available for pickup at the Public Works Fleet Maintenance Facility, 2405 Pembroke Ave., on weekdays after 3pm and anytime on weekends; check with Public Works first to confirm availability.4 Residents can also request free delivery of a half load or a full load of wood chips from Public Works.4
Picking a tree service in Hoffman Estates: common questions
A limb is over the house. What should I do?
A limb alone, with the rest of the tree still sound, is a trimming job; deadwood up in the crown and limbs over the roof are the shaping work. Say on the call whether the limb is touching the roof, still green or dead, and whether it is near a wire. A limb cracked at the fork but still attached to the trunk is a different situation from one hanging loose. If the limb is already touching the roof after a storm, start with the storm and emergency work page.
What is the difference between trimming and pruning?
The two words overlap in day-to-day use. The Morton Arboretum recommends selective pruning over shearing.8
When can oaks be pruned?
The Morton Arboretum says oaks should not be pruned between mid-April and mid-October, when fresh wounds attract the beetles that carry oak wilt spores.5 The pruning guide builds around that window.
Who handles a parkway tree in Hoffman Estates?
The Village. Parkway trees are owned and maintained by the Village, with routine trimming every four to seven years, mostly in late fall and winter.4 The tree rules page in the related list below separates Village work from private.
Does the stump come out with the tree?
A stump is its own job. The stump grinding page covers what the dig looks at and the JULIE locate before any dig day.
Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?
Not always, and not with every species. ComEd recommends that trees planted within 20 feet either side of pole-to-pole power lines have a mature height under 25 feet,9 and the Village's parkway rules list a set of large street trees that may be planted and say trees under overhead lines must be sized so they do not interfere with the lines.2
Who do I call about a tree touching a wire?
Do not go near it. A downed, sparking or burning line, or anyone hurt, means 911 before anything else. Report the limb to ComEd at 1-800-334-7661.3
